English Learner Support Services
This department supports schools in our district to ensure that English Learners (ELs) have equal access to a high-quality education and the opportunity to achieve their full academic potential. Santa Rosa City Schools recognizes that ELs have a double curricular load- they shall become proficient in academic English, and they shall master all of the academic content required of all students in California. This means that ELs require additional services to ensure that they acquire English and have access to the full curriculum in a way that makes instruction comprehensible and meaningful.
The purpose of Reading Interventions is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and state academic assessments. This purpose can be accomplished by providing supports such as professional development for teachers; providing additional instructional time to students demonstrating a need for more support as well as enrichment and acceleration; improving and strengthening accountability, teaching, and learning by using State assessment systems designed to ensure that students are meeting challenging State academic achievement and content standards and increasing achievement overall, but especially for those in need of additional supports; promoting school wide reform and ensuring the access of children to effective, scientifically based instructional strategies and challenging academic content; and last, but not least, affording parents substantial and meaningful opportunities to participate in the education of their children.
